BAND BIO! - July 29, 2008
Forged from the cauldron of Houston's fertile open jam scene, DR RICK & THE BURNERS features a stable core of seasoned musicians and a host of featured guests. Band leader, singer and guitarist Rick Patt is a medical doctor, Chuck Cavaleri sings & lays down a searing bass and anchorman John Blalock is our in-the-pocket drummer. Most gigs feature guitar virtuoso, The Very Teri Greene, longtime host of DanElectro's legendary Thursday open blues jam, and we've been playing recent dates with hip organ and piano veteran, Mr. Dave! Depending on the venue, our frequent guests (like sax players Bruce Harrison and Tom Groover) include percussion, brass, fiddle, harp, keyboard & more, helping us keep it fresh, festive and sometimes, downright magical!

Well, there's the music, & there's spreading the WORD. And, yup, while the music's what we're about what's the fun without sharing it?
And on a more serious note,,,
No matter how tight or hip our sounds are, our ability to book gigs depends entirely on our (growing) capacity to draw an enthusiastic crowd! That's where you come in!
While for tavern owners, this means a thirsty crowd, lots of our friends are sober, so now worries!
We play nite spots, festivals and street fairs, private events and benefits!

Because of how dynamically these events are organized, you are guaranteed a pleasantly unpredictable constellation of artists and a, likewise, forever fresh musical palette! This is often where we get together with our extended "AFTER BURNER" & "BACK BURNER" musical family, cats we have played with on & off over the years, especially Bruce Harrison on sax, The RagTags' Bill Nelson & James Napier on bass & guitar, Brother Chazz on keyboards, Carlos on Congas, various wonderful horn players & others! Musicians come early & sign up...this is our chance to play together & network!

We feel that Danelectro's Guitar Bar is the site for the city's PREMIERE Open Jam, commencing every Thursday at 9:30 PM Sponsored and lubricated by music lovers & owners Bob & Mel, the jam has been run by local guitar legend, The Very Teri Greene for many years. His Hot Band, featuring The Alfred Kennedy on bass & The Billy Budd on drums rotates frontmen on a weekly basis, thus keeping it always fresh & pretty magical! We're talkin' NO's Don Thomas, Starvin' Marvin' & TC, here! Although a designated blues jam, don't be surprised if the sound veers towards jazz, roots or funk! Never dull!

Hard Core BLUES NITE, fronted by stellar house band featuring owner Tom McLendon on harp, premiere bluesmen John Richardson & Larry Evans on guitar & bass and legendary drummer Jackie Gray, with frequent appearances by Mojofromopolis, another killer blues outfit! This is BLUES SCHOOL in session - predictably searing and consistently attracting Houston's best! Come early to sign up & BURN with us!

SUNDAY - SHAKESPEARE PUB (14129 Memorial Dr - 832-444-3619). I'm new to this particular scene, but its been around and is very hip! "Spare Time" Murray's outfit featuring Screamin' Kenny on guitar & Robert Taylor on Harp open around 9 PM. Spare Time is a consummate pro, bassmaster & a all-around friendly dude! Nice waterin' hole. See ya!
TUESDAY & MONDAY Houston's incomparable Chinese Bluesman RICK LEE & his NIGHTOWLS (veteran bassman Thurman W. Robinson & the incomparable skinman, Juan Abair) has been a longtime host of some of the town's best jams. Consistently a great scene at THE HIDEAWAY Steakhouse (3122 Dunvale at Richmond, 713-977-3515, TUESDAY around 9:30 PM). Great players, good food and very friendly! Also, a pleasant surprise is Rick & The NightOwls new jam on MONDAYs at THE LITTLE NAPOLI Restaurant (near the Galleria - 6445 Westheimer - 713-266-9999 - around 9 PM). While still underpopulated, this is a sleeper where you can often stretch out & play a little longer!
